She had no idea. He had been planning it for weeks, the location, the roses, the timing, the ring. And somewhere in that plan, he reached out to me. My job was simple: be invisible, be ready, and make sure that when the moment came, every emotion on her face would be captured forever.
That is what a proposal in Los Cabos looks like when it is done right. And if you are reading this, chances are you are planning one.
Why Los Cabos Is One of the Best Places in the World to Propose
There is something about this place that makes every moment feel more significant. The desert meets the sea. The light at golden hour turns everything golden. El Arco stands at the tip of the Baja peninsula like it was built for photographs. Luxury resort beaches stretch along the corridor, private and quiet enough for the most intimate moments. And the Pacific side offers wild, dramatic sunsets that no studio could ever replicate.
Whether you are envisioning a surprise on a yacht, a candid moment on a secluded beach, or a proposal woven into a couples photo session at sunset. Los Cabos has the backdrop for it.
The 3 Types of Proposals I Photograph in Cabo
Over the years I have photographed proposals across Los Cabos in very different ways. Here are the three approaches I work with most, each one unique in how it unfolds and in what it captures.
1. The Yacht Proposal
There is something undeniably cinematic about proposing on the water. The yacht leaves the Marina in Cabo San Lucas, the coastline opens up, and somewhere between the sea and the sky, with El Arco in the distance, he gets down on one knee.
This is one of my favorite types of proposals to photograph because the setting does so much of the work. The light on the water, the movement of the boat, the expression on her face when she realizes what is happening. it all comes together in a way that feels like a movie.
For yacht proposals, the session length depends on how long the couple rents the boat. typically one to two hours. I work directly with whoever is organizing the experience, coordinating the timing so I am positioned and ready before the moment arrives.

2. The Candid Beach Proposal, Photographed from a Distance
This is the proposal style that surprises people the most when I describe it and the one that produces some of the most powerful images.
Here is how it works: the person proposing contacts me first, in secret. We choose the location together, sometimes a beach they already love, sometimes a spot we scout in advance specifically for the light and the angles. A circle of roses is arranged on the sand. A reference point is marked so I know exactly where to position myself. The couple is told they are going for a walk on the beach.
I arrive 40 minutes early. I find my position, far enough to be completely invisible, close enough to capture every expression with a telephoto lens. I know what they are wearing. I know the exact spot where it will happen. And I wait.
When he gets down on one knee, she is completely unprepared. There is no photographer she can see. There is no setup that gives it away. There is only him, and the question, and the raw, unfiltered reaction that follows.
Those are the photographs that make people cry when they see them for the first time.
After the proposal, we spend time together on the beach, some portraits at golden hour, relaxed and unhurried, while the emotion of the moment is still fresh.
This particular proposal took place on a beach in Todos Santos, one of Baja California Sur’s most beautiful and unspoiled stretches of coastline
about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas, and worth every minute of the drive.
3. The Proposal Hidden Inside a Photo Session
This is perhaps the most personal approach of al l, and the one where I have the most control over what gets captured.
The couple books what appears to be a regular sunset photo session. She thinks they are simply taking some photos together on the beach. He and I have already agreed, in advance, on the signal, a look, a pause, a moment I will recognize and when it comes, I am already close, already focused, already ready.
Because I am working as their photographer from the beginning, I can document everything: the relaxed smiles before she has any idea, the exact second his expression changes, the moment she understands what is happening, the tears, the laugh, the ring going on her finger, and the kiss that follows.
Eight photographs. One story. Beginning to end.
After the proposal, the session continues, portraits as an engaged couple, at golden hour, on the beach. By the time we finish, they have a complete set of images that tells the entire story of one of the most important evenings of their lives.
How to Plan a Surprise Proposal in Los Cabos
If you are considering hiring a photographer for your proposal, here is what the process looks like when we work together:
Start with an email. That is always where it begins. Tell me your idea, your dates, and where you are staying. We will take it from there privately and confidentially, without anything showing up on a shared device if you are careful about it.
We choose the location together. Depending on where you are staying, there are many options resort beaches along the corridor, wild Pacific-facing beaches, the marina, open water. If I have not photographed the spot before, I do a scouting visit in advance to understand the light, the angles, and the best position for the telephoto.
I arrive 40 minutes early. Always. This gives me time to get into position, check the light, and be completely ready before you arrive. For candid beach proposals, we agree on a reference point, a specific spot marked in advance. so I know exactly where the moment will happen.
We stay in sync on the day. On the morning of the proposal, we coordinate by WhatsApp, confirming timing, what you are both wearing, and any last-minute details. For photo session proposals, we agree on a signal in advance so I know exactly when to shift from portrait mode to documentary mode.
The session length is flexible. A focused 30-minute session concentrates on the proposal moment itself and a few portraits afterward, ideal if you have dinner reservations right after. A one-hour session gives us time for photos before the proposal, during the moment, and a relaxed portrait session once she has said yes. Yacht sessions vary depending on how long you have the boat.
You will receive between 40 and 100 edited photographs, depending on the length of the session all professionally edited, delivered through an online gallery.
One More Thing: The Romantic Dinner After
Several of my clients have coordinated with their hotel to arrange a romantic beach dinner immediately after the proposal. It is a detail that transforms the evening from a single moment into a full experience and it photographs beautifully.
If this is something you are considering, I am happy to help you think through the timing so the photography and the dinner flow seamlessly together.
Real Proposals, Real Reactions
Every proposal I photograph is different. Different people, different locations, different levels of planning. But the one thing they all have in common is that the person being proposed to never sees it coming and the photographs show exactly what that looks like.
That is what I am here for.
