Few places in the world offer a proposal setting as dramatic as Cabo San Lucas. With El Arco rising from the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez, a private yacht proposal here comes with a backdrop most couples only dream of.
How it works
Most proposals depart from the Marina in Cabo San Lucas, cruising toward Land’s End and El Arco before making their way into open water. The moment itself almost always happens facing the Sea of Cortez side of the Arch; it’s the most photographed face of the rock formation, and the water on this side is calmer, which means a smoother, more comfortable ride for the couple during the moment that matters most. Some captains recommend the Pacific side instead, since fewer boats pass through and the view feels more private, but the ocean there tends to be rougher. After photographing both, I prefer the Sea of Cortez side for the comfort it gives couples in that moment.
Sessions typically run one hour and take place at sunset, when the light over the water is at its most golden. Some couples extend to two hours and bring along snacks and drinks to turn the proposal into a small celebration on board.

A proposal before setting sail

Not every proposal happens out at sea. One of my favorite sessions took place right at the dock, before the yacht even left the marina. The couple arrived to find a circular floral arch waiting for them, and once aboard, the yacht’s interior was decorated with balloons and flower petals, set up for an intimate dinner shared with close friends.

It was proof that the moment matters more than the location, Sometimes the most memorable proposals happen before the adventure even begins.

What to expect if you’re planning one
* Golden hour departures give the softest, most flattering light for photos.
* The Sea of Cortez side of El Arco offers calmer water and the most iconic angle.
* If you want to celebrate right after, consider booking a two-hour window with drinks and snacks on board.
* Dockside setups with floral decor are a beautiful option if you’d rather celebrate with friends before or after the boat ride.

Whether it’s just the two of you against the open ocean or a small celebration with your closest friends aboard, a yacht proposal in Cabo San Lucas is a moment that photographs itself; my job is simply to be there, quietly, when it happens.
